How to enroll — Homeschool in Charlotte County

The Charlotte County Home Education Office was created to help parents and guardians homeschool in Charlotte County while also meeting the school attendance law.

Step #1: FILL OUT a Notification of Intent form.

This is a simple one-page “Home Education Notification of Intent" form that asks for basic information.

Step #2: SUBMIT your Notification of Intent form to officially establish your homeschool.

Once completed, you can email or mail your Notification of Intent form to the Home Education Office as instructed on the form.

By submitting this form, your student will be automatically unenrolled from their Charlotte County school.

Step #3: CHOOSE A HOMESCHOOL CURRICULUM & BEGIN within 30 days.

Check out our article on how to choose a homeschooling curriculum, as well as these other helpful links to homeschool curriculum reviews and profiles of learning resources:

Note: If your student has a history of truancy, you’ll need to have an online portfolio review with the Home Education Office approximately 30 days after you establish your homeschool.

Charlotte County homeschool requirements: Annual evaluations

While there are no specific curriculum requirements (no list of things you must teach) to homeschool in Charlotte County, your child will need to have an annual evaluation at the end of the year. Here are the options for annual evaluations:

  • Complete a state-standardized test.
  • Take a nationally normed student achievement test.
  • Get an evaluation from a psychologist who has a valid and active license.
  • Compile a portfolio that demonstrates your child’s progress, have it reviewed by an evaluator and file the Home Education Annual Evaluation Form. Send your completed form to the Home Education Office using the instructions on the form. (Note: Some evaluators may submit the form for you. In any case, the form is due no later than one year from the date you established your homeschool with the Notification of Intent as mentioned above.)

If you choose to compile a portfolio…

Your homeschool portfolio must be "a log of educational activities which is made contemporaneously with the instruction and which designates by title any reading materials used and samples of any writings, worksheets, workbooks, or creative materials used or developed by the student," per Section 1002.41, F.S. That may include:

  • A daily log — schedules, field trips, lesson plans, course goals, etc.
  • A reading log — list of books (including textbooks and workbooks) your student has read or curriculum used
  • Samples of your student’s work — worksheets that show progress throughout the year, photos of learning, extracurricular activities, group events, etc.

Note: The evaluation must be performed by a licensed Florida teacher.

That person doesn’t necessarily need to be employed as a teacher, but they must be a licensed Florida teacher holding a valid teacher’s certificate.

How long do I need to keep my homeschool portfolio?

Make sure you hold on to your portfolio for the required two years in case the Home Education Office wants to perform an inspection.

We’re actually working on that right now. Thank you for asking, and stay tuned!

Just one. You can do that and anything you set your mind to, including being a great teacher. So look in the mirror and say “thank you” to yourself for the great choice you’re making and all your hard work.

You got this. You belong in this community. And we’re glad you’re here!
